Transformational Leadership
Transformational leadership is a leadership style where a leader puts the interest of his or her team before his or hers. The leadership style is a method that contains several characteristics that focus on team and social development (Nanjundeswaraswamy & Swamy, 2014). A transformational leader has several key elements that contribute to his or her leadership approach. First, the leader practices individualized consideration. In this case, a transformational leader works on developing individual team members being personal coaches, advisors, and motivators in the organization. They work towards the development of every team member regardless of their demography or status. Secondly, a transformational leader works towards intellectual stimulation (Sethuraman & Suresh, 2014). In their teams, these leaders create an innovative culture that encourages team members to be creative in completing tasks and performing provided assignments. Such creates a developing team which increases the morale of the members and the team. Additionally, the leader provides inspirational motivation. Under this element, a transformative leader inspires and motivates the team members intending to ensure that they are all productive and they utilize development opportunism presented to them at the workplace. Lastly, the leader develops idealized influence in the team (Yahaya & Ebrahim, 2016). Being role models for others in the team is one of the things that a transformational leader does exceptionally during his or her tenure. He or she also ensures that group members have respect and trust in him or her so that they can understand him or her as their role model when being involved in the team’s activities. Through these key elements, a transformational leader is developed as an individual who seeks to advance his or her team members by developing them through the process of leadership.
Our principle practices a transformational leadership style. He is open to new thinking and ideas, encourages talent development, ensures the commitment of school members, is responsible, trusts the school members, and actively participates in developing others around him. He also gives others a chance to lead and challenges individuals to be intelligent and critical thinkers, which are characteristics of transformational leaders (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018). The principal perfectly fits a transformational leadership style as his characteristics are similar to those of a transformational leader.
I think I am also a transformational leader. My involvement with my team is meant to ensure the progress and development of each. I involve every member in the decision-making process and ensure that everyone actively participates in the team’s activities. Furthermore, I am involved in open communication with the members of my time, and I provide my skills to them to develop their abilities in performing specific tasks. In some cases, I encourage innovation and creativity, especially in areas that I find less risky and where there is a chance to develop new ways of doing things. I am actively involved in assessing my team members after the performance to evaluate the factors that would have led to failure. When the failures are realized, I take my team members through the tasks, explaining the expectation and providing a solution that helps in their development. Sometimes I appoint others to work on my behalf to let them gain the leadership skills that I possess. These characteristics fit and resemble a transformational leader; the leader would ensure the development of his team by any means possible (Ghasabeh et al., 2015). Although I have not developed the complete skills of a transformational leader, I am closer to this leadership style than others.
